Supporting Hierarchical Guided Tours in the World Wide Web

چکیده

Guided tours are well known from hypertext systems as a means to collect hypertext documents in a sequence with a certain meaning. This can be followed by readers using next and previous links. As there is almost no support for guided tours in the World Wide Web so far, these structures have to be built up manually, which not only causes a lot of work on updates but is also almost impossible in the case of non-local documents. This paper presents a simple server-side concept for building guided tours using any existing Web pages. The pages used within a tour need not be aware of being used, and thus, need no special preparation at all. Pages may occur multiple times within several tours or even within one tour. We present a server-based implementation demonstrating the concept.

Ariadne: A Java-based Guided Tour System for the World Wide Web

This paper presents a Guided tour system for the WWW, called Ariadne, which implements the ideas of trails and guided tours, originating from the hypertext field. Ariadne appears as a Java applet to the user and it stores guided tours in a database format separated from the WWW documents included in the tour. The main advantages of the system compared to similar systems are: (1) an independent ...

Benefit of the WWW-Based Presentations as a Complementary Part of Conventional Lectures in the Basics of Informatics

Hypertext and the WWW appear to have a positive effect on learning. However, the problems associated with the aforementioned may endanger the benefit to learning. Thus, the role and the forms of hypertext and the WWW must be discussed. Due to the common problems of "information overload" and being "lost-in hyperspace" we suggest guided tours in the form of a slideshow presentation as a solution...

Context-based navigation in the Web by means of dynamically generated guided tours

A key advantage of hypermedia systems such as the Web is that the user is able to navigate through the information space in a non-linear fashion. He can explore the interlinked documents according to his own interests and insights, instead of being confined to the rigid, linear structure of e.g. pages in a book. A downside, however, is that this navigational freedom entails the risk of disorien...

Fourth generation hypermedia: some missing links for the World Wide Web

World Wide Web authors must cope in a hypermedia environment analogous to second-generation computing languages, building and managing most hypermedia links using simple anchors and single-step navigation. Following this analogy, sophisticated application environments on the World Wide Web will require thirdand fourthgeneration hypermedia features. Implementing thirdand fourth-generation hyperm...
